Plot Summary
Peter Parker is a smart but socially awkward high school student who lives with his aunt and uncle in Queens. He is fascinated by the research of his father, Richard Parker, who disappeared along with his wife when Peter was young. One day, he finds his father's old briefcase and discovers some documents that lead him to Oscorp, a biotechnology company run by Norman Osborn.
There, he meets Dr. Curt Connors, his father's former colleague who is working on a project to create a serum that can regenerate lost limbs using cross-species genetics. Peter also encounters Gwen Stacy, a fellow student who works as Connors' intern. He sneaks into a lab where he is bitten by a spider that has been genetically enhanced with the serum.
Peter soon develops spider-like abilities, such as enhanced strength, agility, reflexes, and the ability to stick to walls and shoot webs from his wrists. He also becomes more confident and outgoing, impressing Gwen and standing up to his bully, Flash Thompson. He makes a makeshift costume and begins to fight crime as Spider-Man, using his father's motto: "With great power comes great responsibility."
Meanwhile, Connors injects himself with the serum in an attempt to restore his missing arm, but instead transforms into a reptilian humanoid called the Lizard. He becomes obsessed with spreading his mutation to the entire city, believing it will create a new world order. He also learns that Peter is Spider-Man and targets him and his loved ones.
Spider-Man clashes with the Lizard several times, while also trying to protect Gwen and her father, Captain Stacy, who leads the police force against him. He also struggles with his relationship with his aunt and uncle, who worry about his safety and his secrets. Uncle Ben is killed by a carjacker whom Peter failed to stop earlier, leaving Peter devastated and guilt-ridden.
Spider-Man eventually learns that the Lizard plans to release a chemical cloud from Oscorp's tower that will turn everyone in the city into lizard-like creatures. He races to stop him, but is wounded by the police who mistake him for an enemy. He is helped by Gwen, who gives him an antidote that can reverse the Lizard's mutation.
Spider-Man confronts the Lizard at the tower and manages to inject him with the antidote, restoring him to human form. However, Captain Stacy arrives and tries to arrest Spider-Man, but is fatally stabbed by the Lizard's tail. Before dying, he makes Peter promise to stay away from Gwen for her safety.
Peter honors his promise and breaks up with Gwen, leaving her heartbroken. He also reveals his identity to Aunt May, who accepts him and supports him. He continues to be Spider-Man and vows to protect the city from any danger.
Review
The Amazing Spider-Man is a well-made film that delivers on its promise of action, romance, humor, and drama. The cast is excellent, especially Garfield and Stone who have great chemistry and portray their characters with depth and charm. Garfield captures the essence of Spider-Man as a witty, heroic, and relatable hero who faces personal challenges as well as external threats. Stone is equally impressive as Gwen Stacy, a smart, strong, and independent young woman who is more than just a love interest.
Ifans is also effective as the Lizard, who is not a typical villain but a tragic figure who succumbs to his own hubris and desperation. He is a worthy adversary for Spider-Man, who has to deal with the moral dilemma of fighting someone who was once his father's friend. The supporting cast, including Leary, Sheen, and Field, also add to the emotional weight of the story.
The film is directed by Webb, who is best known for his romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer. He brings his skills of storytelling and character development to the superhero genre, creating a film that is not only exciting but also heartfelt. He balances the tone of the film, blending humor and drama without being too dark or too light. He also handles the action scenes well, using clear and coherent cinematography and editing that allow the audience to follow the movements and emotions of the characters.
The film is written by Vanderbilt, Sargent, and Kloves, who are experienced screenwriters who have worked on films such as Zodiac, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and the Harry Potter series. They craft a script that is faithful to the source material but also adds some new elements and twists that make it fresh and interesting. They also pay attention to the themes and messages of the story, such as responsibility, identity, family, and love.
The film is not without its flaws, however. Some may argue that it is unnecessary to reboot the franchise so soon after the previous trilogy by Sam Raimi, which was also well-received and successful. Some may also find some plot holes and inconsistencies in the story, such as how Peter obtains his web-shooters, how Connors becomes the Lizard without anyone noticing, and how Spider-Man escapes from certain situations. Some may also feel that the film is too long and slow-paced at times, especially in the first half where it spends a lot of time on Peter's origin story.
Overall, The Amazing Spider-Man is a good film that deserves a chance to be seen and appreciated by fans and non-fans alike. It is a reboot that respects its predecessors but also stands on its own as a quality piece of entertainment. It is a film that showcases the talents of its cast and crew, who bring to life one of the most iconic and beloved superheroes of all time.
