The film follows John Bennett, who as a child wished that his teddy bear Ted would come to life. The wish coincides with a shooting star and comes true, much to the brief horror of his parents. Word spreads and Ted briefly becomes a celebrity. 27 years later, John and Ted are still living in Boston, and are still staunch companions enjoying a hedonistic life. John is dating Lori Collins whom he met at a dance club. As their fourth anniversary approaches, Lori hopes to marry John, but feels he can not move forward in life with Ted around. John is hesitant about making Ted leave, but he is persuaded to act when they find Ted at home with a group of prostitutes, with one defecating on the floor, after their anniversary dinner. John finds Ted his own apartment and a job at a grocery store, where Ted begins dating his co-worker Tami-Lynn.
However, their friendship is tested when Lori's boss Rex tries to seduce her, and a stalker named Donny kidnaps Ted with the intention of making him his son Robert's toy. John and Lori team up to rescue Ted, facing various obstacles along the way. The film culminates in a climactic chase scene at Fenway Park, where John and Lori profess their love for each other and Ted confronts Donny. The film ends with a happy resolution for all the characters.
Ted is a hilarious and heartwarming film that explores the themes of friendship, love, maturity, and responsibility. The film balances crude and sexual humor with emotional moments that make the audience care about the characters. MacFarlane's voice work as Ted is impressive, as he gives personality and charm to the animated bear. Wahlberg and Kunis have great chemistry as John and Lori, and deliver their comedic lines with ease. The supporting cast also adds to the fun, especially Ribisi as the creepy Donny and Sam J. Jones as himself in a cameo role.
Ted is a must-watch for fans of MacFarlane's style of humor, as well as for anyone looking for a laugh-out-loud comedy with a touch of fantasy. The film is rated R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, and some drug use.
